Dr. Sawhney is Professor of Economics at the Centre for International Trade and Development,
Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her teaching and research focus on international trade,
environmental policy, multilateral environmental agreements, food safety, renewable energy, sustainable development, and environmental provisions in the WTO. She has published widely in leading international journals including the World Economy, Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Review of Development Economics, Review of Environmental Economics and Policy, Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy, Environment Development and Sustainability, etc., and authored the book The New Face of Environmental Management in India (Ashgate Publishing, UK).
Professor Sawhney has served as Vice-President of the Indian Society for Ecological Economics, as an External Expert in the Consultative Committee on Trade and Environment (Ministry of Environment and Forest), and as a Member of the Advisory Committee on Trade and Environment Issues (Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India). Currently a consultant for the International Food Policy Research Institute, Washington D.C., she has earlier consulted for the UNCTAD, World Bank, ICRIER, IIFT, etc.. Sawhney has held visiting position at the Institute of Environment and Sustainability, University of California Los Angeles, and was awarded the Senior Visiting Fellowship by University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Berlin. She earned her PhD in Economics at Columbia University, New York, and was recipient of the President’s fellowship and University fellowship at Columbia University for her graduate studies.
